A driver deliberately rammed a vehicle into a group of pedestrians in Caen, northern France, killing at least one person and injuring 10 others late Wednesday night. The suspect, who was born in Russia, has been arrested, according to regional official David Clavière.

Clavière stated that one person had died and seven of the 10 injured were in critical condition. Local media reported the death toll had risen to two overnight, but officials had not yet confirmed the increase.

Caen Mayor Aristide Olivier told local radio that the incident did not appear to be a terrorist act, suggesting it may have stemmed from "a fight that turned bad." A police investigation into the incident is ongoing. The car drove into pedestrians who were in the street across from the train station, Clavière said.
