At least 17 people were injured, including the driver, when a vehicle plowed into a crowd of fans celebrating Mexico's World Cup win in Cabo San Lucas on Wednesday night. The incident occurred on Lázaro Cárdenas Boulevard shortly after 9 p.m. as fans had gathered to celebrate the team's 3-0 victory over Czechia in the World Cup's Group Stage.

Officials stated that the driver of a black sedan was met by a large crowd that had occupied the street. Video footage reportedly shows rowdy fans surrounding the vehicle and climbing on it before the driver allegedly accelerated forward, striking multiple people. The injured were transported to local hospitals, with their conditions not immediately disclosed. The driver was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for treatment.

The Baja California Sur Attorney General’s Office has opened an investigation into the alleged hit-and-run. No charges have been filed at this time.

In response to the incident, officials issued a warning urging citizens to exercise caution during public gatherings, follow directions from authorities, and avoid actions that could endanger themselves or others. The statement noted a desire to prevent incidents similar to a recent event in Chihuahua City, where a pickup truck driver allegedly struck fans celebrating Mexico's win over South Korea.

Mexico secured the top position in Group A with a 3-0 record and is advancing to the Round of 32.
