A river boat traveling downstream towards the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo has been placed under quarantine as a precautionary measure due to concerns over the Ebola virus. Security services intercepted the vessel, the Yingfeng 2, offshore, adhering to World Health Organization standards to prevent potential spread into Kinshasa.
The boat was carrying passengers, including at least one individual who died during the journey. Health Minister health minister announced that all passengers are being screened. Public health teams are on standby to respond once the boat is secured. Previously reported cases in Mongala Province, where the deceased passenger disembarked, have been clarified as not involving Ebola, according to Kamba.
The Democratic Republic of Congo is currently facing its 17th Ebola outbreak, declared on May 15. This outbreak is attributed to the rare Bundibugyo species of the virus, which had not been seen for over a decade. There are currently no specific drug treatments or vaccines targeting this strain, although initial human trials for a vaccine are underway in the United Kingdom.
Since the outbreak began three months ago, infections and deaths have continued to rise. Official figures indicate 3,973 confirmed cases and 1,801 deaths, making it the second deadliest Ebola outbreak on record. Authorities report that over 17,000 people are under monitoring after potential contact with infected individuals. Across five provinces, 674 patients are in isolation or receiving treatment, with 776 reported recoveries.
In Kinshasa, preparations for a potential Bundibugyo response are intensifying. Surveillance and rapid-response capabilities are being strengthened at Maluku, a primary entry point into the city. Officials have emphasized that these measures are precautionary but underscore the seriousness of the ongoing epidemic.
