Spanish police announced Wednesday the arrest of 44 individuals in a multiyear investigation targeting a sophisticated drug smuggling ring with ties to Dubai investors. The operation, conducted in coordination with Ecuadorian authorities and overseen by Europol, resulted in the seizure of 21 tons of cocaine.

The investigation revealed that the ring was smuggling drugs from South America into Spain, primarily using shipping containers packed with commercial goods. Ecuadorian police initiated the first phase of arrests in March 2025, detaining 36 suspects and executing approximately 50 property raids within the country. ![Packages of cocaine, some labeled with logos such as "Tesla" and "Chevrolet," and a cardboard box filled with bananas and cocaine packages.]( "Packages of cocaine, some labeled with logos such as "Tesla" and "Chevrolet," and a cardboard box filled with bananas and cocaine packages.")

Following the Ecuadorian operation, Spanish police arrested eight additional suspects in raids conducted across Spain, confiscating approximately $1.15 million (1 million euros) in assets. The smugglers' method involved concealing the illicit substances among legitimate cargo, with a common practice being the use of banana shipments originating from the port of Guayaquil in Ecuador.

This bust represents a significant blow to international drug trafficking networks that utilize global shipping routes to distribute narcotics.
