Doctor Accused of 1994 Rwanda Genocide Offenses to Stand Trial in UK

A doctor accused of multiple offenses related to the 1994 Rwandan genocide is scheduled to face trial in the United Kingdom in the autumn of 2027. Dr. Vincent Brown, formerly known as Dr. Vincent Bajinya, 65, faces charges including conducting or encouraging the deaths of members of the Tutsi ethnic group.

Brown, who resides in Islington, North London, has been charged with one count of conduct ancillary to genocide and six counts of conduct ancillary to murder as a crime against humanity. A judge has set a provisional trial date beginning October 4, 2027, with an estimated duration of eight to 12 weeks. A plea and case management hearing is scheduled for January 15. Brown denies any wrongdoing and has indicated he will plead not guilty to the charges.

An estimated 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed during the 100-day genocide in 1994. Brown, who qualified as a medical doctor in Rwanda in the 1980s, served as the head of the country's Department of Family Health in Kigali. He lived in a Kigali suburb with his wife and young son during the period in question.

Prosecutors allege that between April 6 and April 13, 1994, Brown was involved in six murders. These charges follow a seven-year British investigation into the killings. The court was informed that a £100,000 bail condition, set earlier in October, has not yet been met. During a pre-trial hearing at the Old Bailey, the prosecution stated that the events of 1994 represented "the most devastating wave of mass killing in modern history," with approximately 100,000 murdered in Kigali within the initial days and weeks of the genocide. Brown is alleged to have been a "leader" or "supervisor" of violent acts carried out by others in the early stages of the genocide. He is the first person in the UK to be charged in connection with the Rwandan genocide.
