The family of Simon Gettings, 55, has shared a tribute following his death on Saturday afternoon when his delivery van was struck by a Northern train at a level crossing in Burscough, West Lancashire. Gettings, a father of two, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services.

Two passengers on the train, which was traveling from Southport towards Wigan, were treated for minor injuries. The British Transport Police (BTP) have launched an investigation into the incident.

In their statement, Gettings' family described him as a "devoted husband, a loving father of two, and a much-loved member of our family." They emphasized that his family was paramount, stating he was "at the centre of our world, someone we could always turn to, rely on, and share life's happiest moments with." The tribute also noted his care for his parents through dementia until their passing, his role as a valued neighbor and friend in Southport, and his respected career as a teacher in Southport, Liverpool, and Blackpool, where he was known for going "the extra mile."

The family also highlighted Gettings' loss to "countless families he supported and advocated for over the years," and mentioned he had taken early retirement to spend more time with his loved ones. They remembered him as a "keen reader" with "wide knowledge," possessing an "unmatched" sense of humor, justice, and humanity.

"Simon's tragic and untimely death has left an enormous void in the lives of all who knew and loved him," the family concluded. "He will be missed more than words can say, and the love Simon had for his family, and the love they will always have for him, will remain with them forever."

The BTP's investigation is ongoing, and the train remained at the scene for over a day. Services on the line were suspended for other vehicles.
