Derelict Leeds Church Sells for £100,000 at Auction

A derelict Grade II listed church in Leeds has been sold at auction for £100,000, auctioneers BTG Eddisons confirmed.

St Mary's In The Wood United Reformed Church, located on Commercial Street in Morley, has been disused for worship since 2008. The building sustained significant fire damage in 2010, exacerbating its disrepair. The fire, which began around 2:30 BST in June 2010, prompted the evacuation of 20 nearby residents due to fears that the church steeple might collapse.

Previously, the site had seen lapsed planning applications for its redevelopment. One proposal aimed to transform the church into a hotel, restaurant, and car park. Another plan to convert the fire-damaged structure into 18 apartments did not materialize.

The Gothic revival-style building, constructed in 1878, has remained vacant for over 15 years. BTG Eddisons has not disclosed whether the buyer is a commercial or private entity.

In a separate development in 2023, Leeds City Council acquired the adjacent former Sunday School building, built in 1900, intending to use it as a learning and skills center.
