Deadly Fire Erupts at Canadian Military Base
Defence Minister confirms casualties at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, citing high winds as a factor in the blaze's rapid spread.
A significant fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta has resulted in casualties, including fatalities and injuries, according to Defence Minister David McGuinty. The minister described the situation as "very, very active and delicate" as Canadian Armed Forces personnel worked alongside local authorities to manage the blaze and investigate its cause.
Prime Minister Mark Carney acknowledged the "serious incident creating a major fire" in a statement on X, expressing his thoughts for those affected. Canadian Forces Base Wainwright is a major military training facility. High winds contributed to the fire's rapid spread, causing it to breach the base's fences, the Municipal District of Wainwright reported.
McGuinty stated that he could not recall a similar incident in recent memory. While the exact time the fire began is unclear, the Municipal District of Wainwright first alerted the public to the incident around 5:30 p.m. local time. Authorities have urged residents to avoid the area and to provide emergency vehicles with the right of way.
