A fire that engulfed a popular Bangkok bar on Sunday night killed at least 27 people and left dozens injured, authorities confirmed Monday. The blaze broke out at Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao in the city's Chatuchak district while the indie band Thotsakan was performing.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as smoke began to fill the venue. Ice Athipat Wijarn, the band's manager, saw smoke emerging from behind the keyboardist and heard him shout for people to evacuate. Within moments, a fierce inferno tore through the bar.
Wijarn recounted trying to open a door in the smoke-filled room before an explosion propelled him outside the building. The fire led to significant casualties, with confirmed deaths reaching at least 27 and numerous others sustaining injuries.
Among the fatalities were Thotsakan's keyboardist Kwang, lead singer Breeze, and drummer Bew, who succumbed to their injuries, according to a social media post from another band member. The status of male singer Din remained unclear.
Lead singer Tik Chaichana narrowly escaped the blaze because he had stepped away to use the restroom shortly before the fire started. Videos circulating online showed him distraught and crying as he ran from the burning establishment. He later posted on Facebook that he was safe but had lost all his belongings and was in shock.
The tragic incident has reignited discussions about the need for authorities to enforce stricter fire safety regulations in public venues.
