The owners of a £8 million manor in the Cotswolds have been left 'devastated' after a significant blaze ripped through the historic property just one year after its purchase. The fire at Barton House, a Grade II-listed building dating back to the 17th century, is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault in a light fitting on the first floor.

Fire crews were on the scene for nearly 12 hours on Saturday, September 5, 2026, finally extinguishing the inferno just before midnight. Images from the scene show that the fire obliterated the roof of the manor, though the extent of interior damage is still being assessed.

Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that eight engines were dispatched to the incident in Guiting Power. Firefighters utilized three jets, two hose reels, and 24 breathing apparatus sets to bring the blaze under control. The service received the stop message at 11:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The manor, which was restored in the early 20th century and was previously home to the Hambro family, was sold to a private buyer in January 2025 for £8.28 million. The owners, who have requested to remain anonymous, expressed their shock and devastation following the incident.

Local residents have offered support to the owners, with approximately 30 people from Guiting Power assisting in the clean-up efforts on Sunday. The owners extended their gratitude for the numerous messages of support from the community.

Local witnesses described the fire as 'huge,' with concerns that the top floor may have been lost and significant damage sustained elsewhere in the house. They expressed sadness at seeing the 'beautiful house so badly damaged,' especially after recent refurbishments.
