Colosseum Worker Dies After 30-Foot Fall During Lighting Installation

A 22-year-old worker installing a new lighting system at the Colosseum died after falling 30 feet from the ancient Roman amphitheater. The worker, identified as Andrea Moretti, was a specialist high-altitude rope access technician.

Emergency services responded to the scene after the fall, which occurred overnight. Despite resuscitation efforts, Moretti succumbed to his injuries. Italy's Culture Ministry confirmed the death and expressed condolences, describing it as the "senseless death of a young man while at work."

As a mark of respect, the Colosseum Archaeological Park closed the second level of the monument where the accident took place for the day. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Moretti, an avid rock climber, was reportedly working at a high altitude to install the new lighting system, according to Italian newspaper La Stampa. The Colosseum, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the world's most famous landmarks, attracts millions of visitors annually.

This incident follows a separate event last year when an American tourist impaled himself on a fence at the Colosseum while attempting to take a selfie. The 47-year-old required emergency surgery and extensive stitches following that accident.
