Colossal Statues of Ramses II Unearthed in Egyptian Village

Two massive statues of Pharaoh Ramses II, hidden for approximately 3,000 years, have been discovered in the village of Behbeit el-Hagar in Egypt's Nile Delta. The discovery was initiated when a local farmer noticed a mysterious stone block in his field and alerted authorities.

Archaeologists dispatched to the site uncovered the remains of two large royal statues. One has been confirmed as Ramses II, one of ancient Egypt's most powerful rulers, and the second is also believed to depict him. Egypt's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities confirmed the findings, stating that the mission uncovered the remains of two massive royal statues, one of which is King Ramses II, while the other is likely also attributed to him.

Among the significant finds is a large head of Ramses II measuring approximately 5 feet 3 inches (1.6 meters) tall. The pharaoh is depicted wearing the double crown, a symbol of unified Upper and Lower Egypt. Experts estimate the complete monument, including its base, may have originally stood around 28 feet (8.5 meters) high.

The second statue is even larger, measuring about 8 feet (2.4 meters) in length, though its lower section is missing. Researchers noted that its facial features remain remarkably well-preserved despite its age.

The second statue is also believed to represent the legendary pharaoh, who was one of ancient Egypt’s greatest rulers

Further excavations unearthed a pink granite block inscribed with hieroglyphics and royal titles associated with Ramses II.

Excavations also uncovered a block of pink granite covered in hieroglyphic inscriptions bearing royal titles linked to Ramses II

Authorities credited the farmer's diligence for aiding in the protection of valuable cultural heritage. The ongoing excavations aim to uncover any further treasures that may lie beneath the village. Archaeologists anticipate that these discoveries will offer new insights into the ancient temple complex in the region and its significance during Ramses II's reign. Behbeit el-Hagar is historically known for the remains of an ancient Temple of Isis, which was a significant religious center during the Late Period and Ptolemaic era.
