A major search and rescue operation is underway in the English Channel after a vessel carrying five people was reported to be in distress southwest of Eddystone Lighthouse. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) received the alert just after 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 29.

Assets deployed to the scene include a coastguard rescue helicopter, a fixed-wing aircraft, and RNLI lifeboats from Falmouth and Plymouth. Local vessels have also joined the effort, with maritime tracking apps showing numerous boats heading to the area to assist.

A French fishing vessel has reportedly sunk with five individuals on board, according to local news outlet Plymouth Plus, which also stated that the French Embassy is aware of the situation and is in contact with affected families.

The French naval vessel FS Flamant has been deployed, and an additional aircraft from Humberside Airport was sent to aid the operation. The Newquay-based R924 Coastguard helicopter temporarily returned to refuel and was expected to rejoin the search.

The MCA confirmed the incident is ongoing and stated that no further information was available at this time.
