The death toll from a landslide in southwestern China has risen to 51, local authorities announced Thursday, as search crews concluded operations on land. Ten individuals remain unaccounted for.
The landslide occurred on July 17 outside the city of Chongqing in Pengshui County, where falling rocks and soil buried more than 10 residential buildings and a minibus. Search and rescue efforts are now focused on dredging and operations within the Wujiang River, according to a statement from county officials.
Divers and underwater robots have been deployed to aid in the river search. The incident also resulted in 10 injuries, with three individuals having been released from the hospital. Over 1,100 residents were evacuated from the affected area, and traffic is expected to resume shortly.
