Capybara Pup Celebrates First Halloween at Edinburgh Zoo
Six-month-old Bru, the first capybara born in Scotland in 18 years, experienced the holiday with festive treats.
Bru, a six-month-old capybara, embraced the spirit of Halloween at Edinburgh Zoo with a special trick-or-treat session. The young rodent, born earlier this year, was the first of his species to be born in Scotland in nearly two decades.
For his first spooky season, Bru was presented with pumpkins, squash, carrots, and bamboo leaves. His parents, Luna and Rodney, also participated in the festive feeding, with both adults seen nibbling on a pumpkin while Bru observed.
The pup's name, Bru, was chosen by the public and is inspired by the weight of newborn capybaras, which typically range from 1.5 to 2.5 kilograms, similar to the weight of six cans of the popular Scottish soda, Irn-Bru. Bru now weighs significantly more than that.
Earlier this year, keeper Jonny Appleyard expressed pride in Luna and Rodney's care for the new arrival. He noted that capybara pups are particularly adorable and grow quickly, encouraging visitors to see the new pup while it was at its cutest.
