At least 14 people died and 28 others sustained injuries when a bus collided with a truck in a remote part of northern Uganda, authorities announced Wednesday.

The incident occurred late Tuesday at a trading center along the highway leading to the northern city of Gulu, according to a police statement.

Police preliminary reports suggest the bus driver was speeding and lost control of the vehicle while attempting to avoid a pedestrian. The bus then collided head-on with an oncoming trailer.

Fatal road accidents are a recurring issue in Uganda and other East African nations, often attributed by police to speeding drivers on narrow roads.
