At least 22 people were killed and 28 others injured Wednesday when a passenger bus crashed in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, according to authorities.
The accident occurred on a road connecting the tourist resorts of Dahab and Nuweiba in the South Sinai province, the Egyptian Health Ministry stated.
The ministry reported deploying 20 ambulances to the scene to transport the deceased and injured to nearby hospitals. The nationalities of the victims were not immediately specified by the ministry.
The Jordanian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Jordanians were among the casualties, though it did not provide a specific number. The Amman-based Al-Mamlaka public broadcaster reported that 10 Jordanians died in the crash, stating the bus was traveling from Cairo to Amman when it overturned.
While the Egyptian health ministry did not detail the cause of the crash, Egyptian media indicated that the bus overturned after a tire blowout. Deadly traffic accidents are a significant issue in Egypt, where thousands of lives are lost annually due to factors including speeding, poor road conditions, and inadequate enforcement of traffic laws.
In a separate incident in January, 21 people were killed and 16 injured in a multi-car pile-up near the southern province of Beni Suef.
