A bullfight in Colombia's Castilla district of Coyaima, Tolima, took a dangerous turn when a bull jumped over a fence and into the crowd, injuring four people. The incident occurred during a July 20 festival where the animal is typically released into the ring for public interaction. Video footage captured the approximately 2,000-pound animal charging along the edge of the arena before leaping into the stands packed with spectators.
Screaming fans fled in panic, with some attempting to escape the stadium while others jumped into the bullring to avoid the charging animal. One woman was trampled in the stands, and three others sustained injuries from the bull's actions. Emergency services provided immediate treatment to the four injured individuals and transported them to local medical centers. The bull was eventually subdued and removed from the scene.
Ricardo Suárez, Tolima’s Secretary of the Interior, condemned the event, stating that such spectacles should cease. "The bull jumped towards the barrier where spectators were standing and attacked some of them," he told local media. "We must move towards new forms of entertainment and new spectacles that genuinely enrich Tolima’s culture. This proves that such barbarity is neither culture nor bravery. Bullfighting must end in Tolima. It is a grotesque practice that contributes nothing to society."
Globally, an estimated 180,000 bulls are killed annually in bullfights, with many more injured or killed in related festival events, according to Humane World for Animals. The organization notes that while proponents argue for a quick death if the matador is precise, this is often not the case, with bulls frequently suffering injuries to their lungs and bronchial tubes, leading to a more prolonged and agonizing demise.
