Thirteen people, including seven Britons, died in wildfires that have recently been contained in Spain. Spanish authorities confirmed that 12 of the 13 victims were foreign nationals. The nationalities of the deceased included seven from the United Kingdom, three from Belgium, one from France, and one from the United States, with the final victim being a Spanish citizen.
Mentioned among the British nationals who perished were a couple, Pete and Fran Gillam, who resided in the village of Bédar, which experienced the most severe impact from the wildfires. Their family confirmed their deaths. Their daughter, Danielle Gillam-Kirton, shared on Facebook that the family had received confirmation from the police that her parents had not survived the fire.
The wildfires burned through an estimated 7,000 hectares (17,300 acres) of land. Spain has experienced frequent and severe heatwaves in recent years, with temperatures often surpassing 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).
