Thai police have charged a 20-year-old British woman, Isabelle Violet Carreras, with the murder of her partner, Thomas David Powell, a 33-year-old UK businessman. Powell was found dead with multiple stab wounds at their rented luxury villa in the resort town of Pattaya.

Police were alerted on Thursday morning by a friend of Powell's who became concerned after being unable to reach him by phone. The friend visited the villa and discovered Powell's body in the shower, with the house appearing to be in disarray. Footage shows officers confronting Carreras at the scene. She initially claimed Powell had taken his own life and showed police a large hunting knife found in a bloody sink.

Investigators stated that evidence at the scene contradicted Carreras' claims. They found cuts on her fingers, bloodstains, and signs of a struggle throughout the property. The hunting knife, believed to be the murder weapon, had allegedly been washed and wiped clean, which police described as an attempt to conceal evidence.

Powell, who reportedly ran a large cannabis farm in Thailand, sustained stab wounds to his back, torso, and left hand. Police Colonel Nattapon Phongsuksakul, superintendent of the Nongprue district station, said that based on the evidence, investigators believe Carreras is responsible for the killing. She has been formally charged but denies the allegation.

Investigators believe the alleged murder occurred around 4 a.m., but the authorities were not notified until 9:30 a.m. when Carreras contacted a friend in England via WhatsApp. This friend then contacted another friend in Thailand to check on Powell. Police noted that calling for medical assistance or police sooner, potentially from 4:30 a.m., might have saved his life.

Carreras has suggested that Powell had been consuming cannabis heavily and taking prescription Valium. Police confirmed that cannabis had been smoked at the scene and that cannabis intoxication may have contributed to the suspect's actions, though they cannot yet confirm if Carreras was intoxicated at the time of the incident. The smell of cannabis was reportedly strong throughout the house.

The motive for the alleged killing remains unclear as Carreras has declined to provide details. Police are reviewing CCTV footage from inside the villa. Neighbors reportedly told reporters that the couple frequently argued, but these claims have not been verified by police.

The couple had been staying at the villa for only seven days. Thailand decriminalized marijuana in 2022, but the lack of regulations has led to concerns about unregulated sales and links to violence. The government is reportedly seeking to restrict recreational cannabis use.

Carreras remains in police custody. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities awaiting full autopsy and forensic examination results.
