Hundreds of British troops have deployed to Poland to participate in the first major exercise of the Multinational Force Ukraine (MNF-U), a UK and France-led initiative designed to rebuild the Ukrainian army. The exercise, codenamed Koalicja, runs from November 9 to 22 and involves approximately 2,800 personnel from 11 allied nations.
The primary goal of the drill is to rehearse how troops would move, protect, and supply a force to aid in the reconstruction of Ukraine's armed forces once the current conflict ceases. While defense officials have stressed that the MNF-U is not an offensive force, commanders are preparing for the possibility of deployment into Ukraine should hostilities end and political leaders request their support.
Lieutenant General Tom Bateman, the British commander leading the MNF-U, stated that the exercise demonstrates the force's capability and commitment from Coalition of the Willing nations to Ukraine's long-term stability and security. The MNF-U aims to strengthen Ukraine's ability to deter future aggression.
Nations participating in Exercise Koalicja include France, Belgium, Estonia, Germany, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden, and Turkey. The drills will focus on testing command-and-control arrangements, rehearsing the movement of personnel and equipment, and assessing the integration of multinational components. British Army's 7 Brigade soldiers will practice logistical movements, supported by simulated air cover from RAF Typhoons and a Voyager refuelling aircraft.
Other activities planned include rehearsals for training Ukrainian recruits and establishing command centers. Sailors from Turkey are also practicing mine clearance for potential Black Sea operations.
Defence Secretary Wes Streeting emphasized that the exercise signifies the UK's commitment, alongside allies, to prepare for peace in Ukraine. He stated that Ukraine's security is integral to Europe's security, and the UK will stand with Ukraine for as long as necessary.
The deployment comes amid warnings that Russia might attempt to oppose the reconstruction effort. Western officials have indicated that the task group is prepared to defend itself against a wide range of threats, including potential challenges in the information domain.
Recent assessments suggest Russian forces have lost significant territory in Ukraine, with casualty figures reaching their highest monthly totals since the war began.
