British Tourist Sparks Outrage Over Comments About Auschwitz Cafe

A British tourist's critique of a cafe near the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, focusing on its prices and lack of decaffeinated coffee, has ignited a firestorm of online backlash. The user, known on TikTok as freespirit390, shared videos of her visit to the former Nazi concentration camp in Poland, where an estimated 1.1 million people were killed during the Holocaust.

The cafe, situated near the museum's entrance, offers hot and cold drinks as well as food. The TikTok user initially posted a video detailing her experience, captioned 'Prices at Auschwitz,' and advised others to bring their own refreshments.

She reported that the cafe did not offer decaf coffee or alternative milk options. Describing her strawberry smoothie as tasting 'very watered down' and her daughter's lemonade as smelling 'like toilet cleaner,' the tourist also noted that their two drinks cost approximately £9. She contrasted this with a taxi ride from the station, which she found to be a bargain at £1.20.

Commenters quickly accused the tourist of disrespecting the memory of those who perished at the camp. Remarks included, 'It's all gone downhill since the change in management' and 'Yeah, my grandparents' immediate family didn't enjoy it either in the 40s.' Another user stated, 'This focus should be on respecting their memory, not turning the experience into a personal review.'

In response to the criticism, the tourist posted follow-up videos, some of which she labelled as 'disrespectful.' She characterized some of her critics as 'wokes' and 'snowflakes,' suggesting they were younger individuals under 40 or 50. She asserted that her comments were about the cafe's quality and expense, and not directly about the camp itself, stating, 'No one died in the cafe, no one died there, no one was gassed there.' She also claimed officials were 'monetising' the Holocaust, arguing it should be a memorial rather than an attraction.

The Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum was established in 1947 and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. The site serves as a memorial to the victims of the Nazi regime, primarily Jewish people, but also Poles, Roma, Soviet prisoners of war, and others targeted during World War II.
