A British tourist has died in Gran Canaria after being struck by a vehicle driven by an individual suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and drugs. The incident occurred late Friday night in the popular resort of Playa del Ingles.
The victim, a 25-year-old man, was reportedly crossing a road in an area not designated for pedestrians when he was hit. Police and paramedics responded to the scene but were unable to save him.
Authorities reported that the car's owner, who was driving at the time, tested positive for cocaine and was found to be over the drink-drive limit. However, his alcohol reading was just below the threshold for a criminal offense.
Local police are preparing a report for an investigating judge, who is expected to open a manslaughter inquiry. It remains unclear if an arrest was made at the scene.
A spokesperson for a regional emergency response center confirmed that the alert was received at 11:35 p.m. Friday. Multiple agencies, including the Canarian Emergency Service and local and national police, were involved in the response. Medical personnel confirmed the man's death due to severe injuries.
Reports suggest the deceased British man may have been in Gran Canaria to attend the Winter Pride Maspalomas event. The driver of the car is understood to be a local resident of the island. Further details are anticipated from the police in the coming days.
