British Tourist Hospitalized After Pufferfish Bite in Greece

A British tourist was taken to a private clinic for urgent treatment after being bitten by a pufferfish while swimming off the coast of Zante, a popular Greek island. The incident occurred in Kalamaki.

While the tourist initially reported being bitten by a monkfish, port authority sources are investigating the possibility that a silver-cheeked toadfish, a species of pufferfish known for its aggressive nature and toxic properties, was the actual culprit. This invasive species has been observed spreading throughout the Mediterranean, prompting Greek officials to implement measures such as sea barriers to protect swimmers.

The silver-cheeked toadfish possesses formidable teeth capable of tearing through materials like bone, wood, and metal. In addition to its dangerous bite, the pufferfish's flesh and organs contain tetrodotoxin, a potent neurotoxin that can lead to heart and lung failure if ingested.

Scientists suggest that the expansion of this species into the Mediterranean is linked to climate change, citing warming sea temperatures and increased salinity. The fish are believed to have migrated from the Red Sea via the Suez Canal.

Reports of the pufferfish's destructive impact are mounting. Fishermen have voiced concerns about the species decimating their catches and damaging their nets, with some describing the situation as dire for their livelihoods. "If one of them bites you, it will simply cut off your finger. They destroy the sea. They don't leave anything behind," one fisherman stated.

This is not the first reported incident involving the silver-cheeked toadfish in Greece. In June, an elderly woman in Varkiza near Athens required stitches after being attacked by one of the fish. In another instance, a dog in Israel became severely ill, exhibiting neurological damage symptoms, after licking a dead pufferfish found on a beach. The dog survived after receiving prompt veterinary care.

Efforts are underway to mitigate the threat, including the installation of a 2.5-kilometer floating barrier in some bays along Evia, Greece's second-largest island. Videos have circulated online demonstrating the fish's powerful bite, showing it tearing through metal cans.
