A 27-year-old British tourist was found dead in a swimming pool at a rented holiday home in Vilamoura, in Portugal's Algarve region. The discovery was made in the early hours of the morning, according to reports.
The man had reportedly been staying at the property with friends. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death. While authorities currently believe the incident was accidental and have found no indications of foul play, they are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination. The examination is scheduled to be conducted in Faro, the Algarve's capital.
The GNR police force initially responded to the scene before handing the case over to the Policia Judiciaria. Investigators have since interviewed the British man's friends. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has been approached for comment.
This incident follows a recent death in the same region. On June 16, the body of a 23-year-old British tourist was found five days after he was reported missing during a swim in Albufeira. A large search operation was initiated after a friend raised the alarm when the man vanished. His body was discovered floating off the coast.
In July of the previous year, two British friends, King Edonmi, 29, and Mo Lisau, 27, were found dead in an Albufeira hotel pool. Portuguese police sources suggested at the time that the pool's design, combined with the individuals' inability to swim, may have contributed to their deaths, pending post-mortem results.
Recent weeks have also seen multiple child drownings in pools across Spain. In Mallorca, a three-year-old British girl, found floating in her family's rented villa pool, died after being rushed to Son Espases Hospital. Another British toddler died in hospital in Fuerteventura after being rescued from a hotel pool. In Lanzarote, a four-year-old British girl drowned in a hotel swimming pool, and a three-year-old boy died after falling into a swimming pool at a holiday home near the Costa del Sol.
