A 50-year-old security guard has been arrested in Greece following accusations of rape made by a British teenager on the island of Crete. The 18-year-old woman claims the incident occurred early Tuesday morning in Malia, a popular holiday resort town.
According to local media reports, the woman alleged that a man she did not know approached her outside a hotel and led her to a secluded area where the assault took place. She subsequently reported the incident to the local police, who initiated an investigation. Authorities located and arrested the suspect, who is reportedly a local security guard from the Heraklion region, on Tuesday afternoon.
This alleged incident follows other recent reports of sexual assaults involving British tourists in Greece. Last month, an 18-year-old woman reportedly claimed she was raped in Crete by a fellow British tourist after being followed into a bar bathroom. A 19-year-old was arrested in connection with that incident and transferred to Heraklion's courthouse. Media outlets noted that the alleged victim in that case had met the suspect once before encountering him again at a bar.
Earlier this year, two sisters, aged 18 and 19, alleged they were raped by two British men they met on the island of Rhodes. The sisters reported that they met the men at a nightclub on April 27, socialized, and later went to a nearby hotel. They claim they were separated into different rooms and attacked after initially agreeing to accompany the men.
Authorities in Rhodes arrested two men, reportedly brothers, following statements from the alleged victims. Investigations into these claims were launched by local law enforcement.
