British Mother Drowns in Bahamas While Saving Her Sons
A British mother died in the Bahamas after attempting to rescue her two sons who were swept away by strong currents.
Leanne Gregory, 36, drowned on Tuesday while on a snorkeling expedition in the southern Bahamas with her husband and two children.
According to reports, Gregory entered the water to save her sons when a strong current pulled them away. Police were alerted shortly after 10 a.m. that the mother was found unresponsive at the ferry dock in Bimini. She had already been transported for medical treatment, where she was pronounced dead by doctors.
The boys were rescued by emergency services. Her husband, Nathan Gregory, 36, attempted to resuscitate his wife without success. Witnesses described the incident as devastating and noted that the currents were too strong, even for good swimmers.
Linty Stuart, owner of L&A Water Taxi, told local broadcaster ZNS that he was the captain of the boat when people on board alerted him to the situation. He stated that bystanders were able to pull the two boys from the water, but the strong currents made it difficult to reach the mother. Stuart reported seeing Gregory face down in the water as he attempted to maneuver his boat to a calmer section.
Jason Saunders, the ship's first mate, attempted CPR on Gregory when the boat docked, but she could not be revived. A witness at the scene described Gregory as a hero and commended the parents.
The family, who lived in Stapleford, Nottinghamshire, had been together for over 20 years. The Royal Bahamas Police Force has launched an investigation into the death. Preliminary reports indicate that foul play is not suspected, and a post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
A Foreign Office spokesperson confirmed that they are in contact with local authorities and providing support to the family.
