British Mother Dies Heroically Saving Children in Bahamas
A 36-year-old mother drowned in the Bahamas while attempting to rescue her two sons from a strong current, with her husband calling her a hero.
A British mother, Leanne Gregory, 36, has died after a heroic attempt to rescue her two sons from a powerful ocean current while on a snorkeling expedition in Bimini, Bahamas. Her husband, Nathan Gregory, 36, described the incident as "unimaginable" and hailed his wife as a hero.
The family was on a snorkeling trip when a strong current swept the two boys away. Emergency services and Mr. Gregory managed to save the children from the water. Despite attempts to resuscitate Leanne, it was too late. A "freak wave" reportedly swept the boat away from her as she struggled to keep her son above water until he was rescued.
"I just have to be thankful for the hero she was in life and in death, and totally grateful for the fact my boys got out safely," Mr. Gregory wrote in a GoFundMe post. He described his wife as his "soulmate" and "childhood sweetheart," with whom he had been in a relationship for 22 years.
Royal Bahamas Police Force stated that preliminary information indicates foul play is not suspected. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. The police report noted that officers responded to reports of an unresponsive female at the North Bimini Ferry Dock shortly after 10 a.m. on Tuesday. She was transported to a local clinic where she was pronounced dead.
A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed they are in contact with local authorities and providing support to the family.
