A British-German man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his wife, who he claimed had fallen from a hotel balcony during sex. Christian M., 60, was jailed in late July for the murder of Marta, 40, with prosecutors believing he intended to "dispose" of her to start a new life with his mistress.

Marta died on May 18, 2023, after falling approximately 200 feet from a balcony at the Leonardo Royal hotel in Frankfurt. Christian M. initially told authorities that his wife had fallen over the railing while they were engaged in sexual activity. However, investigators found the evidence at the scene did not support this account.

The investigation spanned nearly two years, during which time Christian M. was living with his mistress near Frankfurt. He was arrested in the spring of 2025. A 20-day trial commenced on April 1, 2026, at the regional court. During the proceedings, reenactments of possible sexual encounters were conducted on the hotel's 22nd-floor balcony as part of the evidence presentation.

According to the court, Christian M.'s mistress had urged him to leave his wife, which prompted him to research discreet methods of killing online. Prosecutors suggested he then decided to throw his wife from the balcony to stage her death as an accident. His Google searches revealed he had looked into poisonous herbs, legally obtainable weapons, and the effects of sedatives. He also reportedly ordered a sedative online and researched inheritance law.

The day before the murder, Christian M. searched for hotels with balconies and for tall mountains with deep precipices in Hesse and Bavaria. The court determined that he had booked the hotel room the day prior, telling his wife, who was aware of the affair, that he wished to reconcile. He specifically requested a room on an upper floor.

The prosecution suggested the idea of a balcony fall might have been influenced by an episode of the series 'CSI: Vegas.' The judge noted that Christian M. had previously encountered online information suggesting that falls from great heights could be difficult to distinguish from accidents.

CCTV footage showed Marta appearing visibly affected by alcohol when returning to the hotel room with her husband on the evening of the murder, after they had spent the day together. The judge stated that the couple did not appear to be engaging in "dirty sex" but rather that Marta "needing to sleep."

Guests reported hearing a loud scream followed by cries of "No, no!" approximately 13 minutes after the couple returned to their room. Marta's body was discovered on the ground below, partially unclothed, with injuries to her elbows that predated her death.

On April 1, 2026, a 20-day trial began at the regional court, during which possible sex scenes were reenacted on the balcony on the 22nd floor of the hotel as evidence

The judge concluded that there was no doubt Christian M. had murdered his wife, stating his behavior was "morally reprehensible" and that he had "disposed of" his wife "like a garbage bag." The judge added, "It would have been the perfect crime if the authorities hadn't investigated so meticulously."

Marta's family members, including her parents who served as joint plaintiffs, were present for the verdict. Christian M. has been ordered to pay them and his children 35,000 euros in compensation for their loss.
