British Man's Death in Sicily Investigated as 'Ritual Gone Wrong'

Italian investigators are examining the mysterious death of Benjamin John Braithwaite, a 35-year-old man from Leeds, whose naked body was discovered near an off-grid community in Sicily on September 13. Police are reportedly leaning away from the possibility of suicide and are investigating a theory that his death may have resulted from a sexual practice or erotic game gone awry.

Braithwaite's body was found in the countryside between Noto and Canicattini Bagni in the province of Syracuse. An autopsy has been conducted, but initial reports have not provided a definitive cause of death. Toxicology and further examinations are expected to yield more evidence as authorities work to reconstruct his final hours.

Investigators learned that Braithwaite had arrived in the area several days before his death and had become associated with a group living an alternative lifestyle in abandoned farm buildings and makeshift camps. His body was discovered naked near a farmhouse where members of this community had been residing.

Reports indicate that a rope was found near the body, and initial medical examinations revealed marks around his neck, leading police to consider asphyxiation as a possible cause. The investigation is also exploring whether drugs or other substances may have been involved.

While speculation has arisen due to reports of unusual objects allegedly found in the vicinity, including items suggesting rituals, authorities have emphasized that there is currently no evidence directly linking Braithwaite's death to esoteric or occult practices. A Carabinieri spokesman did confirm that a drawing with esoteric connotations was found on a wall near the property, but not in the immediate area where the body was discovered.

The investigation is being led by Carabinieri officers in Noto and is being coordinated by prosecutors in Syracuse. While no suspects have been formally named, Italian reports suggest investigators are considering multiple explanations for the death.

Braithwaite was reportedly discovered after individuals at a gathering at the rural site noticed his absence. Paolo Amenta, the mayor of Canicattini Bagni, described the individuals living in the communal farmhouses as graduates who had chosen a life of isolation, noting they had always been kind and lived in reorganized villages surrounded by nature.

The British Foreign Office confirmed it is supporting Braithwaite's family and is in contact with local authorities.
