A British expatriate in Thailand is facing mounting medical bills and an uncertain recovery after a serious motorbike accident left him with a shattered leg. Darren Cummins, 34, who moved to Thailand in 2015, was involved in a collision on June 13 when a car reportedly executed a U-turn across multiple lanes of traffic.
Cummins, a business development consultant, stated that his leg bore the brunt of the impact. He sustained a compound fracture at the top of his tibia, losing approximately five inches of bone, along with comminuted fractures to his ankle and shin. He also lost the use of his Achilles tendon. The incident occurred at an estimated speed of 100 kph.
"My leg took the brunt of the impact but had that been any other part of my body, whether it was my chest or my head, then I wouldn't be here right now," Cummins said. He described seeing his leg "just dangling off" and being thrown about 30 yards from his motorbike, initially being in and out of consciousness and shock.
He recalled the car driver was traveling in the opposite direction and attempted the U-turn, cutting across all three lanes of the carriageway. Cummins said he did not see the car until it was about a meter in front of him, making avoidance impossible. "I'm lucky to be here," he added.
The medical expenses have already reached approximately £22,000, with further surgeries and rehabilitation required. Cummins reported that the hospital which accepted his case has already exceeded its initial estimate of 600,500 baht, roughly £15,000. He noted that payments are often demanded before procedures, even in emergencies.
Cummins, who has described the ordeal as a "horrific experience," has expressed concern about his long-term mobility, stating it is "less than likely" he will ever walk properly again. The accident has significantly altered his and his girlfriend's lives, and he fears he may never be able to ride a motorbike again, an activity he previously enjoyed for experiencing the country's scenery.
Having exhausted his personal savings, Cummins has launched a fundraising appeal, stating he "swallowed his pride" to ask for help. He wrote on his fundraising page that he "never wanted to become 'that foreigner in Thailand' asking for help."
