British Man Died After 80-Foot Fall From Malta Hotel Balcony

A British holidaymaker died after falling 80 feet from a Malta hotel balcony in the early hours of the morning, an inquest has heard. Kieran Hughes, a 25-year-old software engineer, fell from his sixth-floor room at the Cavalieri Art Hotel in St. Julian's on the Mediterranean island in July of last year. CCTV footage showed Hughes falling from the balcony onto the road outside the hotel at 4:15 a.m.

A passerby alerted a hotel worker, who found Hughes on the ground wearing only boxer shorts. Police officers entered Hughes's room and found his roommate, Osian Jones, asleep and intoxicated. Jones later told police that he and Hughes had spent the evening drinking and visiting a casino and nightclub before returning to the hotel around 3:30 a.m.

The inquest heard that Hughes sustained multiple injuries from blunt force trauma consistent with a fall from height. However, doctors noted that Hughes did not break his arms, which might indicate an attempt to break his fall, suggesting he may not have been aware he was falling. Evidence of severe alcohol intoxication was found, and CCTV footage showed Hughes and Jones holding onto each other as they walked back to the hotel, indicating their level of intoxication.

Coroner Elizabeth Dudley-Jones concluded that there was no animosity between the friends and no third-party involvement in Hughes's death. She stated that after returning to his room in a state of severe intoxication, Hughes likely went onto the balcony for fresh air and tragically fell. The coroner recorded the cause of death as blunt force injuries resulting from an accidental fall.
