Brooke George, a 23-year-old from Gravesend, England, has been charged with the murder of a 26-year-old British man she met on Facebook in Dubai. According to the human rights group Detained in Dubai, George claims she acted in self-defense after the man, whom she met online, repeatedly assaulted her. The group states she faces execution by firing squad if convicted.

Detained in Dubai CEO Radha Stirling said George reached for a kitchen knife after being attacked and punched in the face. "Authorities must treat her as a domestic violence survivor while they investigate," Stirling stated. George is reportedly being held at the Bur Dubai police station and her family is seeking her release on bail.

George reportedly met the man on Facebook and developed an online relationship. She traveled to Dubai for what she described as a positive, week-long visit. However, during a second trip, she claims his behavior became controlling and abusive. She also alleged he withheld her passport and had only booked her a one-way ticket, raising alarms and her desire to return home.

According to George and her family, an incident occurred after an evening at Caffreys Bar in Jumeirah Village. They allege the man became intoxicated, assaulted her in a car, and continued the attack at his apartment. George's family reported that she contacted them in a panic, showing signs of being repeatedly punched, with one eye swollen.

George claims she returned to the apartment solely to retrieve her passport, fearing for her life during a subsequent physical assault. She states she grabbed a kitchen knife within reach and acted in self-defense. She was arrested at Dubai International Airport on June 22 while attempting to leave the United Arab Emirates.

Detained in Dubai has also claimed that George was forced to strip naked in front of male officers, an experience she described as deeply humiliating. The group also alleges she has had limited understanding of the legal proceedings due to a language barrier and has been denied access to her embassy and legal counsel during initial statements. Her mother, Thereza George, expressed deep concern for her daughter's welfare and stated her belief that Brooke was desperately trying to escape her abuser.
