A 12-year-old British girl who disappeared during a family holiday in Japan has been found safe. Carmelita Lakdesha Paul was located on Saturday evening at a police phone box in Yokohama, over two days after she was last seen by her family in Tokyo.
According to reports, Carmelita told officers that she had left her family's accommodation to visit a famous anime location. She also reportedly spent time at internet cafes.
Carmelita arrived in Japan with her parents and older brother on July 21. She was last seen by her family on August 12 at their accommodation and was reported missing the following morning. CCTV footage showed the schoolgirl walking through Tokyo's Kamata district. She was later seen boarding a train to Yokohama Station, where police lost track of her.
She did not take her phone or passport with her and had approximately £70 in Japanese yen. Japanese authorities conducted a search for the girl before she presented herself at the police box. Carmelita was taken into protective custody and is expected to be reunited with her family. She eventually began to miss her parents, according to Japan Today.
