A British family recounted their terrifying escape from a wildfire in southern Spain that has claimed the lives of at least 12 people, according to Spanish authorities. Among the confirmed fatalities are four British nationals, with another 23 individuals still unaccounted for.

Lucinda Curtois, who was vacationing in Bedar with her partner Riyaz Cheytan and their teenage children, stated they were caught off guard by the rapidly spreading flames. The family later learned that close friends had perished in the fire. Curtois speculated that their friends may have left their countryside home on foot because their road had become inaccessible.

Hundreds of firefighters have been engaged in battling the deadly blaze in the southern region of the country.
