British Climber Dies After 60-Meter Fall in Spanish Mountains

A 28-year-old British climber died Thursday after falling approximately 60 meters (200 feet) from Torrecerredo, one of the highest mountains in northern Spain. The fall occurred in a vertical gully as the climber was descending from the summit.

The Spanish Civil Guard confirmed that police and an air unit responded to the scene after emergency services were alerted around 1:45 p.m. local time (11:45 GMT). A mountain rescue unit recovered the man's body and personal belongings. The U.K. Foreign Office stated it is in contact with local authorities regarding the death of a British national in Spain.

According to the Civil Guard, two mountain specialists were lowered by winch to the accident site on the mountain's eastern face. The climber, identified by Spanish authorities as English, was reportedly about 20 meters from the summit when the accident happened.

His body was transported to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Asturias for forensic examination. Torrecerredo, located in the Picos de Europa range, stands at an elevation of about 2,650 meters and is a popular destination for climbers and hikers.

Separately, on Thursday afternoon, a 54-year-old French woman was taken to the hospital after sustaining a leg injury in the same mountain range. Sepa Asturias, the region's emergency services body, transported the woman.
