Flights at Bristol Airport were suspended Saturday evening due to a defect on the runway, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded. The airport announced that operations would remain halted until at least 6 a.m. on Saturday, with incoming flights being diverted to other airports including London, Birmingham, and Cardiff.

Shocking images emerged showing large crowds of people waiting at departure gates. According to reports, nearly 50 flights were scheduled to arrive and 14 were set to depart during the disruption.

Passengers described scenes of confusion and distress. One passenger's partner and daughter were unable to board their flight to Newcastle. He told the BBC that after flights were cancelled, passengers were moved to a crowded area, and alarms began sounding, leading to some individuals screaming and attempting to exit the gate area. He also reported a lack of staff presence and communication.

Other travelers complained about minimal announcements and poor communication from the airport for over an hour. Some passengers expressed frustration on social media, with one user writing on X, "EasyJet holding everyone hostage at Bristol Airport! Let us out! Let us out! Communication is appalling." Another described being "locked in the gate 26 toilets" after inquiring about the cancellation.

A spokesperson for Bristol Airport stated, "Due to a defect on the runway, we have temporarily suspended operations as a precaution, in order to inspect and repair the section affected. We apologize for any inconvenience. Safety is always our number one priority." The airport advised customers to refer to their airlines for flight-related queries.
