Bristol Airport experienced significant travel disruption on Friday and Saturday due to a defect discovered in its runway. The issue forced the airport to temporarily suspend operations, leading to flight cancellations and diversions that left hundreds of passengers stranded, many facing lengthy and unexpected journeys home.

Operations resumed at 8 a.m. on Saturday, but the airport warned that disruptions would continue throughout the day. Passengers reported being stuck at departure gates with limited information. Some flights were diverted to airports as far as Newcastle, over 246 miles away, forcing travelers to arrange long bus journeys. Other diversions included Bournemouth, Birmingham, and Cardiff.

Travelers expressed frustration over what they described as "appalling communication" from airport and airline staff. Social media posts detailed instances of passengers being left without updates for extended periods, and some reported being unable to access facilities. One passenger noted that EasyJet staff were the only representatives present in the departure lounge, and were advising passengers with cancelled flights from Dubrovnik to rebook themselves to Gatwick with no mention of accommodation.

In a statement, Bristol Airport apologized for the inconvenience caused by the "essential runway repairs." They advised customers to contact their respective airlines for flight-related queries. The exact nature of the runway defect and the full extent of the repairs were not immediately detailed.
