Popular Brazilian singer Rey Vaqueiro and his entourage miraculously escaped serious injury Sunday when the plane carrying them crashed and burst into flames while attempting to land.
The Cessna 550 Bravo aircraft overshot the runway at an airfield in Parelhas, in northeastern Brazil, before igniting. Dramatic video shared online shows the plane engulfed in fire.
Both engines of the aircraft caught fire. Vaqueiro, 26, along with his five entourage members and the two pilots, were able to exit the plane safely. Firefighters worked for five hours to control the blaze.
The cause of the crash is under investigation, but local fire chief Lima Verde suggested that a potential brake failure could have led to the plane overshooting the runway, according to CNN Brasil. Investigators noted that the runway was in good condition and the aircraft's airworthiness certificate was valid until May 2027.
Vaqueiro, known for hits like “Displicente – Ao Vivo” and “Veraozao (Ta Color,)”, stated that the incident forced the cancellation of his scheduled performances in Custódia and Canhotinho on Sunday, as well as a concert in Parambu on Monday.
The singer's statement confirmed that all eight individuals on board were safe and receiving necessary medical attention. The mayor of Parelhas, Tiago Almeida, expressed relief on Instagram, calling the event "unimaginable" and praising the swift response of health professionals and emergency teams.
It remains uncertain whether Vaqueiro's remaining eight concerts scheduled for the week, as part of his "Septembro do Rey" tour, will proceed.
