Brazilian police announced Friday they are reopening dozens of cases linked to a self-confessed serial killer, Jorlan Lopes da Silva, 33, who was arrested as he attempted to escape disguised as a woman and carrying a child.

Da Silva is suspected of killing at least 16 people in the Mulungu region of the northeastern state of Paraiba. He was apprehended on Sunday following a two-day search. Paraiba police spokeswoman Gerlane Pereira told The Associated Press that da Silva confessed to an additional 11 killings. The child he was carrying was not related to him, according to police.

Police stated that da Silva is a member of a criminal gang responsible for numerous deaths in the region. He reportedly told officers after his arrest that his first killing occurred when he was 13 years old. The Mulungu region is located approximately 2,500 kilometers north of Rio de Janeiro.
