A seven-year-old boy sustained serious injuries after being struck by a javelin during an athletics training session in Lannion, northwest France. The incident occurred at the Jean Vaillant sports complex.
The athlete, whose identity has not been disclosed, was practicing for the French Championships when the javelin accidentally pierced the boy's stomach. Local media reported that the child was playing football with friends near the throwing area and had entered the demarcated zone to retrieve a ball without noticing the markers.
Following the incident, the boy was airlifted to Morvan Hospital in Brest, where he underwent four surgeries. He is currently in a stable condition.
In the aftermath, Éric Robert, the mayor of Lannion, acknowledged that the demarcation of the throwing area was not sufficiently clear and stated his intention to discuss a new signage system with the local sports association. Joël Lucas, president of the local athletics club, noted that he had previously requested enhanced security measures for the site, suggesting that while unfortunate, the incident may prompt necessary improvements.
Training sessions at the sports complex have been suspended. The boy's family has indicated they do not wish to file a complaint but plan to speak with the mayor.
