Boy, 5, Dies in Australian 'House of Horrors'; Police Investigate Abuse Allegations

Police are investigating the suspicious death of a five-year-old boy in Grafton, New South Wales, after officers allegedly discovered what they described as a "house of horrors." The child was found unresponsive in his family home on Monday morning and could not be revived.

Investigators have launched a major probe into the child's death, with allegations surfacing that the boy and his siblings were subjected to abuse, including being duct-taped into sleeping bags with tape placed over their eyes at night. Sources indicate the boy, who had intellectual disabilities, was allegedly duct-taped around his head as a method to "assist him sleeping."

The boy's father and stepmother, who were present at the home, have been interviewed by police. The findings of a post-mortem examination are expected to guide any potential charges.

The boy's siblings have been moved to live with other family members. Police sources have indicated that officers had previously visited the home in 2025 and raised concerns about the living conditions with officials from the NSW Department of Communities and Justice.

Homicide Squad and Child Abuse Squad detectives are working alongside local investigators as part of Strike Force Milona to examine the circumstances surrounding the child's death.

A NSW Police spokesperson confirmed that emergency services were called to the Grafton residence around 6:40 a.m. on Monday following reports of an unresponsive child. "Officers attached to Coffs/Clarence Police District attended the scene and commenced CPR on the boy," the spokesperson stated. "NSW Ambulance paramedics attended a short time later; however, were unable to revive the five-year-old. A crime scene was established and inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the boy's death are underway."

The NSW Department of Communities and Justice has also launched an investigation. "The Department of Communities and Justice is aware of the tragic death of a young child in Grafton. Our heartfelt condolences go out to those who knew and loved this child," a departmental spokesperson said. "DCJ is working with NSW Police on their inquiries, and given the ongoing investigation, it would be inappropriate to comment further."
