The body of Ian Treger, a 29-year-old teacher from Lexington, Virginia, who disappeared in Peru over a month ago, has been found. His family announced the discovery, stating his remains were located near a trail in the Andes mountains where he had planned to hike.
Treger was last heard from on May 13, having gone missing in the Peruvian city of Cusco. His family reported him missing two weeks later after being unable to contact him. Surveillance footage showed Treger leaving his Airbnb on May 13, the same day his family last spoke with him.
According to Michelle Ludwig, Treger's mother, a shepherd discovered her son's remains on June 30. The body was found beside a small stream in an advanced state of decomposition, bearing similar clothing to what Treger was wearing.
Local police have informed Ludwig that Treger's death is being classified as a hiking accident and that he was alone. However, his mother expressed lingering questions, noting that Treger was an experienced hiker accustomed to high-altitude trails. "I don’t understand how this could’ve happened. He was a very capable hiker and is used to high-altitude trails," she told the Daily Mail.
Treger had arrived in Peru on May 11 for a 10-day trip focused on rigorous hikes in what were described as "high-risk" mountain trails. His personal belongings, including a backpack, camera equipment, wallet, and iPhone, were reportedly found near his body.
Authorities have ruled out foul play, as none of Treger's belongings appeared to have been stolen. However, the investigation into the cause of his death is ongoing. "They have no conclusion about it yet. They are investigating, but this is the kind of hike he’s done so many times before," Ludwig stated.
Ludwig traveled to Peru to support the police and the U.S. embassy in their efforts to locate her son. An online fundraiser was also established to aid in the search and rescue operation.
