Blanche D'Alpuget, the widow of former Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke, has died at the age of 82. D'Alpuget, an award-winning author, was a prominent figure in Australian public life during Hawke's tenure as prime minister from 1983 to 1991.

Her family shared her final message to Australia, which read: 'Our highest calling and greatest achievement is love, the rule of life. Love one another.'

D'Alpuget is survived by her son Louis Pratt from her first marriage, three step-children, and multiple step-grandchildren. She grew up as an only child in Sydney's eastern suburbs.
