Bear Kills Man, Injures Woman in Home Attack Near Mongolian Capital

A bear killed a man and seriously injured a woman in a home attack in the Bayanzurkh district near the Mongolian capital, Ulaanbaatar. The incident occurred overnight on Wednesday in the residents' traditional Mongolian nomadic dwelling, known as a ger.

The man, in his 40s, died at the scene, while the woman, in her 50s, managed to escape and alert neighbors. She is currently receiving hospital treatment for serious injuries, according to city official Munkhbayar M.

Officials have noted a significant increase in bear sightings around human settlements near the capital. Munkhbayar reported that there have been 24 such sightings this year alone, a stark contrast to just two in 2018. This rise is attributed to factors including climate change and food scarcity.

A team of rangers has been dispatched to search for the bear involved in the attack, and authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any further sightings. Videos circulating on Mongolian social media in recent weeks have depicted bears entering gers, damaging property, and attacking livestock, illustrating the growing interaction between humans and wildlife.

In response to the escalating issue, bear-hunting permits have been issued across eight provinces. Officials are also working to acquire tranquilizer dart guns to aid rangers in managing wildlife encounters in rural areas. The situation highlights the evolving landscape in Mongolia, where nomadic traditions persist alongside the growth of settled agricultural communities and increasing urbanization in the capital and other major cities.
