Bangkok Flooding Persists After Rain Eases, Thousands Evacuated

Rain has lessened in Bangkok as of Sunday, but flooding continues to impact several low-lying areas of Thailand's capital, prompting thousands to evacuate their homes for temporary shelters. The persistent downpours over the past 10 days have led to at least eight reported deaths nationwide.

Days of continuous rain have caused widespread flooding and significant disruptions across Bangkok, affecting traffic and businesses. In many parts of the city, accumulated rainfall has surpassed 30 centimeters (11.8 inches).

While Thailand's Meteorological Department anticipates moderate to heavy rain in various parts of the country on Sunday, conditions are expected to improve by Monday.

Bangkok officials have established over 200 temporary shelters, with approximately 3,000 individuals still residing in them as of Sunday. Thirty-one roads remain affected by floodwaters. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt stated that rainfall in the capital has decreased and city workers are focused on draining the water. He noted, however, that water levels in the city's main canals are still high, with some continuing to rise due to inflow from surrounding areas. Several low-lying suburban communities remain submerged, necessitating further evacuations.

Beyond Bangkok, more than 545,000 people in 25 other provinces, particularly in the central and eastern regions, have been affected by flooding, according to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul acknowledged that incessant rainfall had overwhelmed drainage systems in numerous areas. He has directed relevant authorities to implement immediate relief measures and provide assistance to those affected. Several long-distance train and bus services have been suspended, and while airports remain operational, passengers have experienced some delays.
