Thai authorities are investigating a fire that killed at least 27 people and injured dozens more at a popular music bar in Bangkok. The blaze, which broke out shortly before midnight Sunday, reportedly spread rapidly through the venue, a recurring tragedy for nightlife establishments globally.
Early reports suggest the fire may have originated near the stage. A musician performing at the Na Ladprao bar told Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul that he saw smoke coming from a circuit breaker before the power went out, followed by an explosion and thick smoke. Investigators are examining potential electrical faults, possibly involving audio or lighting equipment, as well as the possibility of gas canisters stored in the kitchen.
Witnesses described a scene of panic as the flames engulfed the bar. Videos shared online show thick black smoke billowing from the front entrance as patrons scrambled to escape. Photos from the scene reveal extensive damage to the ceiling, which appeared to be lined with flammable decorative materials.
Experts point to several factors that may have contributed to the high death toll. The rapid spread of the fire could be attributed to combustible materials used in the interior, such as foam soundproofing and plastic decorations, combined with faulty wiring. The lack of a sprinkler system is also under scrutiny, though experts note that overhead sprinklers may not be effective against ceiling fires.
Hindered Evacuation
Obstacles to evacuation are a significant concern. While the single-story bar was reported to have four exits, authorities are investigating whether they were blocked or unusable. One exit near the restrooms, where many victims were found, was reportedly obstructed by a table. Another exit near the kitchen had a damaged emergency sign and a sliding door missing its handle. Experts note that crowded conditions, loud music, and alcohol can impair patrons' awareness and slow escape. In many such venues, patrons are only familiar with the main entrance, and internal layouts can resemble a "maze" with obstacles like beer crates and tables blocking escape routes.
This incident is the latest in a series of deadly fires at entertainment venues worldwide. Similar fires have occurred in recent years, including a blaze at a bar in Switzerland on New Year's Day that killed about 40 people and a 2013 nightclub fire in Brazil that claimed over 200 lives. These recurring disasters often stem from large crowds packed into small spaces with insufficient exits and combustible materials, creating conditions ripe for high casualties.
