Indonesia has introduced new visa regulations specifically targeting foreign influencers and content creators who are using tourist visas in Bali. The crackdown aims to ensure compliance with visa conditions, according to official statements and reports.
Australian SmartTraveller, a travel advisory service, has warned its citizens traveling to Indonesia to secure the appropriate visa for their intended activities. The advisory clarifies that individuals posting content online for revenue, payment, sponsorship, or any commercial purpose while on a tourist visa are in breach of their visa conditions, regardless of whether the content is published after their departure from Indonesia.
"It’s illegal to work, conduct research or volunteer if you’re on a tourist visa," the SmartTraveller website stated, urging travelers to "Ensure you have the right visa for your trip."
Dozens of foreigners have already been detained by the Dharma Dewata Immigration Patrol Task Force in Bali. This task force actively monitors social media platforms and patrols popular areas like Canggu and Ubud, known hotspots for content creation. Penalties for violating visa rules can include significant fines and deportation, potentially leading to lifetime bans from re-entering Indonesia.
Felucia Sengky Ratna, the general head of Bali's regional immigration office, explained that the new laws were implemented to safeguard Bali's tourism industry. "This oversight is carried out comprehensively to maintain security and stability," she said.
Indonesia Immigration has highlighted that working on a tourist visa is a frequent reason for foreigners being deported from Bali. An official social media post emphasized that immigration authorities may scrutinize the purpose of stay, the type of activity, and any economic value derived from it, not solely focusing on direct payment. This includes activities such as professional services, make-up artistry, photography, and product endorsements or promotions on social media, even if the work is unpaid but involves benefits.
