Baby Girl's Body Found on North Wales Shoreline May Have Been in Water for Weeks

The body of a newborn baby girl discovered on a north Wales shoreline may have been submerged in water for up to several weeks, according to initial findings by North Wales Police.

A member of the public found the remains on the Menai Strait shoreline near Siliwen Road in Bangor, Gwynedd, on Sunday shortly before 5 p.m. BST.

A post-mortem examination conducted on Thursday confirmed the newborn was a girl. The force continues to search for the mother and is appealing for her to make contact with authorities.

"We understand that the mother may be fearful of coming forward but we urge her to make contact with us," stated Supt Llinos Davies. She added that the mother's welfare and safety are the department's primary concern.

Police are requesting that anyone with concerns about a girl or woman who may have been pregnant, or whose behavior has changed significantly in recent months—including withdrawal from social ties—to reach out. Davies assured that any information provided would be handled with discretion and that individuals named as potential mothers could be cleared without delay.

"I understand that this is a terribly sad incident for the community and I am grateful for the overwhelming support and assistance that we have received so far," Davies said.

Fiona Giraud, director of midwifery and women's services for Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, also addressed the mother directly. "Our immediate concern remains to be your health, safety and wellbeing," Giraud said. "You may feel you have nowhere to turn, or that you cannot speak to anyone about what has happened. Please do not feel that you have to face this alone."

Giraud added, "We don't yet know all the circumstances surrounding your baby's death, but what is important right now is that we find you, make sure you are safe, and ensure you receive any medical attention and support you may need. I am asking you personally, please take the first step and contact us. There are people to help you."
