Leah Stewart, a 35-year-old assistant principal and mother of one, is continuing her recovery after a serious shark attack at Coogee Beach in Australia on June 13, 2026. Her family provided an update on her condition, noting that while she has experienced challenging days, she has found significant strength from the outpouring of support she has received.
Stewart was attacked by what is believed to have been a 12-foot great white shark. The incident left her with severe bites to her arms and legs, and she was initially hospitalized in critical condition. She was placed in a medically induced coma for nearly two weeks, during which time her arm was amputated, and she underwent multiple surgeries.
Her brother, Joshua Stewart, shared that Leah has found inspiration and comfort in the many messages of support sent from her family, community in Australia, her whānau in New Zealand, and people across the globe. He noted that on nights when she has had difficulty sleeping, she rereads these messages.
The family expressed gratitude to everyone who has shared Stewart's story and offered support. They are currently awaiting the resolution of a technical issue with the GoFundMe page, where over $500,000 has been raised for Stewart's recovery, before they can respond to the messages. Stewart's family stated that she is overwhelmed by the support and that her story has resonated with many people.
